In his seminal work, “The Souls of Black Folk”, Du Bois affirms that the major issue of the 20th century is that of the color line. In accounting for the experiences of blacks in America, he coined the two ideas of ‘double consciousness’ and that of the ‘veil’. The former idea pertains to the way in which African Americans happen to existing with a sort of two conflicting identities, which are mutually antagonistic. This pertains to his black identity and his American identity into which he is seen as being born only as an outcome of the historical remnants of slavery. These individuals are compelled to make sense of their personhood through a dual image of their own eyes as well as the hostile prism of racism.
